Veterinary Assistant

Description

The Veterinary Assistant will have responsibilities in multiple aspects of the hospital’s operations, including animal care and treatment, customer service, and housekeeping duties. The Veterinary Assistant will play a significant role in aiding the staff’s Veterinary Technicians in daily clinical operations and supporting the needs of the team during medical procedures. We are looking for applicants who have a strong work ethic and want to practice at the highest level of their abilities. This position reports to the Practice Manager and will also receive direction from the doctors, Veterinary Technicians, and the Medical Director. Tasks assigned to the Veterinary Assistant may include:

  • Providing compassionate care to patients and clients.
  • Conducting oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.
  • Legibly keeping accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Preparing and maintaining the exam rooms and treatment areas.
  • Performing physical assessments; record observations legibly in files or computers.
  • Effectively restraining patients, even when large or difficult.
  • Knowledge of all common vaccines and vaccination protocols and can explain to clients in a professional manner.
  • Understanding the importance of a clean and orderly facility does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of normal job duty.
  • Maintaining positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Preparing estimates for procedures and discuss financial commitments with clients supporting hospital financial policies.
  • Explaining all necessary follow-up and homecare instructions.
  • Properly caring for all surgical materials and equipment; keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Setting up clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, ear cytology and fungal cultures; maintains a file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
  • Knowledge of appropriate patient positioning for radiographs. Taking radiographs.
  • Understanding the use and care of IV pumps.
  • Admitting patients following hospital policy and doctor’s written orders.
  • Discharging patients based on the veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
  • Performing other duties as assigned including assisting in other areas.
Job Requirements

The Veterinary Assistant will have frequent contact with clients and patients in a fast-paced and changing work environment. He/she must be comfortable working around sick, injured, or unruly animals in an environment where the noise level can be moderate to very loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand: walk: use hands and fingers to reach or feel: climb, balance, stoop, kneel or, crouch. Compliance with hospital safety and employee policy manual is expected. The employee must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted.

Qualifications Desired
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous on-the-job training desirable, but not required
  • Previous animal care background is desirable, but not required
  • Ability to spell, alphabetize, and perform basic mathematics
  • Basic competency and comfort using computers and standard office technology
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service skills
  • Ability to take direction, retain information, and ask questions when clarification is needed
  • Understanding of (or ability to quickly learn) basic medical terminology and minor, routine veterinary procedures
  • Ability to recognize certain predictive behaviors in animals
  • Ability to work under pressure and stay calm in a high volume and potentially stressful environment
  • Demonstrates professionalism and good judgment
  • Regular and timely attendance is required
  • Minimum of 18 years old.
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when stressed, ill or in pain.
  • Can remain calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
  • Can support and be a part of teamwork; works well with all levels of hospital team members.

Client Service Representative

DESCRIPTION

The Client Service Representative will serve as a direct liaison between our clients and veterinarians, ensuring that both the patients’ needs and clients’ expectations are met. He/she will be responsible for communicating treatment plans; maintaining meticulous patient records and documentation of client communications; processing patients’ prescriptions; and collecting payment for services rendered. The Client Service Representative will also be required to answer incoming phone calls and emails in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner. This position reports to the Practice Manager and will also receive direction from the Lead Technician, Practice Manager, and Medical Director.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

The Client Service Representative must possess the ability to work well with people, displaying empathy and understanding while supporting the philosophies and procedures of the hospital. The position requires being able to communicate tactfully and maintain calm compassion in emotional situations, as well as to generally provide our clients with an experience that goes above and beyond their expectations.  The Client Service Representative must be comfortable interacting with animals and working in an environment that can become busy, loud, and/or stressful.
